Mozambique is one of the four global project countries we will be working in during our 2009 Rice Raiser Campaign.
11 December 2008
Hunger Response International Director has just returned from a visit to one of the 2009 Global Projects.
A Sand Dam Project in Mozambique was visited in the first week of December, 2008 and a great deal was learned about the potential Sand Dams have for improving lives in areas where sufficient water is a problem. The building of the dam is a community sponsored, partnered project. Information will be available in the school resource kits so students can learn about the struggles and hopes that people in this part of the world have for clean water. This inspiring Sand Dam Project will provide water for drinking, growing vegetables and providing for their animals for years to come. The benefits are amazing and the need is so tremendously great.
Currently, Cholera is claiming many lives and many more are ill because of this water related disease. We were unable to visit the project in Mancia due to Cholera quarantine, so instead we visited the Dzunga Village and saw a Sand Dam currently being constructed…sadly, there are losses of life to Cholera there, too. However, the people have tremendous hope in the San Dam to change this season of suffering caused by cholera because of it’s potential over the next few years to provide them with sufficient clean water to drink and enough for crop and animal raising. So in spite of the suffering, they press on with the work. It is exciting to realize that our donations can be part of changing the future for village people in these areas.
The Rice Raiser is partnering with Global Partner, MCC. (See Projects/Partners) for this project.
This is a Canadian Food Grains Bank Project with a matching Canadian International Development Agency funding of $4 to $1.
A great way to make your dollar multiply five times it’s worth to help hungry people!

Since we send 100% of all designated donations to the projects, funds for operational expenses need to be raised separately. This year we held our first Annual Fundraiser Event on Oct. 9th, 2008.
