National Hunger Awareness Day

On May 31, National Hunger Response Day, Hunger Response International wants to know how YOU will respond to hunger.

According to Food Banks Canada, in March 2010, 867,948 Canadians walked through the front door of a food bank asking for help. That’s the highest level of food bank use on record! Canada is one of the richest countries in the world – rated 8th by the United Nationsl Development Index. It has weathered the global recession better than most countries and yet still there are families that face tremendous struggles to provide nutritional meals for their families. A true saying is: “Hunger is hunger, no matter where you live!” Walter Paetkau

And yet, most Canadians do not experience extreme hunger to the same extent as close to one billion people throughout our world do. Millions of people live on a $1.25 a day or less and often they are not sure where their next meal will come from. They suffer malnutrition and weakened bodies and consequently, they cannot fight off infection or disease. How do we…how should we, respond to hunger? We’d like to know what your thoughts are and how you plan to respond.

A Contest: Take some time on Tuesday, May 31st to think about hunger and what one person can do on the local and global levels.
