Events – A WALK FOR THE RICE REASON!

Have-A-Rice-Day on April 12, in recognition of World Health Day (April 7). Walk for the Rice Reason is Hunger Response Int.'s Annual Walk to raise awareness about global hunger and support for local and global needs. Come out and join us! It's a 10K walk, but feel free to do as many laps as you can!

“A Walk for the Rice Reason” acknowledges that rice is a very important food item. Being versatile and nutritious it is the most consumed food item in the world. Yes, more than one half of the people in the world depend upon rice for their health and survival. In some countries, people spend 1/2 to 3/4 of their incomes on rice and only rice! Each year on April 7th, the world celebrates World Health Day. On this day around the globe people focus on heath and wellbeing. In response to the millions of people who are malnourished and do not get sufficient nutrients from their food or have weakened bodies because of lack of food, Hunger Response International has identified this global observance day as one of our seven Have-A-Rice-Days. We invite you to help us raise awareness and support for our work by participating in our second annual walk –  a Walk for the Rice Reason!

Purpose: To raise awareness about the lack nutritious food  millions of people struggle with daily and its effects on their health. Also to support for families in Burundi, Haiti, North Korea and Sudan (the four global projects of the 2012 Rice Raiser Campaign – http://www.hungerresponse.org/projects) and the ongoing work of Hunger Response International. This walk acknowledges the distance many women and children have to walk daily for food, water and for fuel to cook their food upon.

The 2011 First Annual Walk for the Rice Reason: THANK YOU!!

We would like to take an opportunity to say thank you all the people who came out and participated in or helped out in making Hunger Response International’s first Walk for the Rice Reason a great success last week on World Health Day. Together, we numbered approximately 60 walkers and we raised $2.500 for the ongoing work of HRI and for the Rice Raiser Campaign Global Projects. It’s a Great Beginning for this first ever Walk, plus, we created more awareness within our community about both local and world hunger. It was a nice way to introduce our Have A Rice Day Movement, too!

Its a great encouragement to have others come along side a vision and help turn it into a reality that impacts others. We’d like to thank the businesses and groups who helped make the event unique and well done:
Abbotsford Save-On-Foods (Sumas Way) – Such a great sponsor and supporter of Hunger Response Int.
thanks for supplying the water, rice, and oranges!!

Abbotsford Kiwanis Club—thanks for cooking and serving up the rice!

Kiwanis memeber and Yale Secondary School teacher, Ann Penner serves up a bowl of rice to walk participants helping everyone Have A Rice Day!

Abbotsford Running Room—thanks for the walk participant bibs and the good advice!

Abbotsford Collegiate Drum Line—thanks for bringing excitement and setting the beat for our walk.
Abbotsford News—thanks for helping us get the word out!
Hub Barton Insurance and Abbotsford Parks and Rec.– thanks for the loan of your tents!
Abbotsford Food Bank—thanks for being on hand to receive the rice that participants donated.
Menno Travel – thanks for putting out the challenge to other businesses to cover the wage of employees work time so that they could come and participate!! Way to go Menno Travel and employees!
Volunteers—teachers and students from Chief Dan George Middle School, Abbotsford Christian Middle School, Columbia Bible College and other individuals who helped!!

April and Stephanie encourage walk participants

With the success of this year’s walk, we are set to turn this into an annual event for which we see a lot of possibilities in the coming years. Next year, we’ll be there…April 12th – same place.
